Our late Great Uncle Harold Pitcairn’s personal custom 1928 PA-5 NC6708 Mailwing now resides at Hoag Airfield, PA in the possession of my brother, who is carrying on the family tradition in aviation. There are 7 Mailwings still flying today.
Mailwing in flight at Hoag Airfield, PA, piloted by David Pitcairn 11/26/2006 "There are a total of 14 mailwings in existence and six or seven flying today." This PA-5 was Harold Pitcairn's personal mailwing, is currently in the possesion of my brother David, an aeronautical engineer, and was featured in the 1932 movie "Central Airport". It is currently undgergoing extensive restoration back to its original and authentic state. The star of the film Blaze of Noon is a PA-7 mailwing on view at the Experimental Aircraft Association Museum at OshKosh, Wisconsin. Others can be seen at the Shannon Air Museum in Virginia, and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.

Other activities: In high school, I used to ride horses and show
competitively, hunt seat equestrian style. My Texas Aunt gave me my first
horse at 14, she had saved him from starvation. His name was Dusty Daredevil
but we called him "Linus" It cost more to truck him up from Texas than he
was worth, but he as well loved. My next horse was a confirmation
gray named Wavelength. He passed away from cancer one summer
while I was a student at Encore before college. My parents didn't tell me until
I got home! I am still mad about that. Then my senior year of high school,
I got the most beautiful bay horse ever, and he knew it. I couldn't help it,
I had just gotten my Strad about the same time, so I named him
Stradivarius. It was pretty funny when they announced
us entering the ring at horse shows :)

I met Announcer Frank Kingston Smith, Jr. at the Reno Air Races in October 2006! His father was the author of “Legacy of Wings”, the book about great-uncle Harold Pitcairn’s extensive contributions to early aviation, including the Pitcairn Mailwing and the autogiro, available on Amazon.com.
With my bro David at Snowbird, Utah. Thanksgiving Weekend, 2006
With Maxim and Harry Eskenazy on a Bulgarian canon in March 2002. We climbed 900 steps in the snow up to this historical landmark of great Bulgarian bravery. Located in the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria, Peak Shipka was the scene of a battle of the 1887 War of Independence. A handful of independent Bulgarian soldiers held off the mighty Ottoman Empire Army for many days until the Tsar Russian Liberation army arrived! This was the day after we finished recording of my second CD: Bruch and Sarasate with the Sofia Philharmonic. Maxim conducted, and his brother Harry played violin in the orchestra. Things were cheap then in Bulgaria. We were able to hire a car and driver for $50 for the entire day, and had a great time visiting many of Bulgaria’s historical landmarks.
After school, my sport was riding. My first horse, given to me at age 14 by my aunt "Dusty Daredevil" nicknamed "Linus." She had rescued him. This was my second horse, “Wavelength”, ridden by my trainer Wendy McCook at a horse show in PA. He was a beautiful confirmation gray thoroughbred. Wave got cancer when he was only twelve, and died during the summer of 1990 while I was away at violin camp. This was my third and last horse, “Stradivarius”, ridden by my trainer’s son, Sean McCook in 1991. I only had him for one year and had to say goodbye when I left for USC I named him after my violin, which had just come home from auction in London. He was sold to a lady in my barn and was happily cared for the rest of his life.
Sightseeing in Moscow. I am standing in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral, which was built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible. On completion, he had his architect blinded so that he would never again build anything which could rival its beauty. I was there to compete in the 1998 Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition and managed to escape with my eyes intact. It is a special treat when I am in PA visiting my parents and my Dad takes me gliding! A tow plane takes us to 4000 ft., and then he cuts us loose and we glide down. My Dad, the glider pilot, is happiest when he is "soaring"
